Proximity economic development: a new challenge for Barcelona

Heterogeneity in cities like Barcelona requires replacing a uniformizing approach with another one that takes into account, when it comes to generating economic development, both the needs and the opportunities found in each of the districts and neighbourhoods of which it is comprised.

Barcelona is spearheading a paradigm shift and proposes a new locally focused economic development model, promoting a proximity economy that has a positive impact on neighbourhoods and districts, either because it helps to meet the needs of each area because it exploits its assets or because it comes from the leadership of people or economic players involved from the area's development.

This article describes how Barcelona has created a new strategy of local development based on proximity, a concept which is new in this public policy field of the city.
