Argentina: Refinor, Salta: a social performance story and a 9-year case study
It all started with a "conventional" performance improvement project in the NW corner of Argentina. Refinor, a petrochemical company succeeded in "turning around" ot conventional bottom line and improving their processes.
But their best employees were leaving the company because the region was in turmoil, during the years (1996-98) previous to the 2001 economic and social meltdown.
Between 1995 and 1998, we started turning the company towards recovering the community and making it self-sufficient, following Roger Kaufman's Megaplanning model, that focuses on social impact.
By helping residents on 4 cities of 40,000 ihnabitants -Aguaray, Tartagal, Pocitos and Mosconi- to develop and apply farming skills to their land, the company helped create 120 new micro farms, making more than 5,000 families self-sufficient.
The company, in turn, benefited from an increased market share as the preferred gasoline brand in the NW region.
It was a stunning success and a great lesson when it was abandoned after an acquisition in 2000. We measured and compared the results pre- and post-Megaplanning in 2005:
