Kaufman Center Honors Barrio Mugica for Outstanding Social Performance During COVID-19 Pandemic
The Kaufman Center proudly presented the prestigious International Kaufman Award to the neighbors and city teams of Barrio Mugica of Buenos Aires
for their exceptional social performance during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2022.
The award ceremony took place in the new Community Center of Barrio Mugica in Buenos Aires
with the attendance of neighborhood leaders and distinguished guests and representatives from the City of Buenos Aires government.
Mariano Bernardez, CEO of the Kaufman Center, and Mariana Sala, COO of the Kaufman Center, honored the resilient neighbors of Barrio Mugica who volunteered in the successful anti-COVID campaign. The city government was represented by Diego Fernandez, Secretary of Innovation and Digital Transformation Buenos Aires City; Tomas Galmarini, Director of Barrio Mugica and Leader of City of Buenos Aires Special Unit of Social and Urban Integration; Gabriel Battistella, Subsecretary of Primary Health Care; and Maria Migliore, Minister of Habitat and Human Development of the City.
Barrio Mugica, a neighborhood of over 40,000 residents, was once an informal settlement facing numerous challenges, such as high population density and low incomes. Despite these difficulties, the community registered one of the best sanitary performance rates in the city during the pandemic, outperforming affluent adjacent neighborhoods like Retiro and Recoleta.
During the emotional ceremony, neighbors from Barrio Mugica shared heartwarming testimonies of courage, solidarity, and the unwavering support they received from the City team. The community expressed gratitude to the City team, the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), and the Kaufman Center for recognizing their outstanding efforts with this internationally acclaimed award.
The International Kaufman Award is a testament to the power of community spirit and collective action in overcoming adversity. The people of Barrio Mugica have demonstrated that, even in the face of unprecedented challenges, communities can triumph through resilience, solidarity, and mutual support.
